Instruction for Candidates Applying for Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme

1.0
Eligibility
1.1

Candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must, at the time of application, hold Master’s degree with at least 60% marks or an equivalent grade of the University, a deemed University or any other University incorporated by any law for the time being in force and recognized by the University. However, for SC/ST candidates, 55% marks are required instead of 60%.

1.2 A candidate will ordinarily be permitted to work for Ph.D. Degree in the subject in which he/she has obtained his Master’s or Bachelor degree in Engineering / Technology / Applied Sciences. Provided that the subject must be one of the subjects included in the Statute of the list of subjects of the University and teaching must be going on in the subject in University Teaching Departments /college affiliated to the University, which has been recognized as a research centre.
1.3 Ph.D. degree may be allowed in allied subjects of interdisciplinary nature of the same faculty or of allied faculties. Whether a subject is allied or not to the subject in which the candidate has done Master’s or Bachelor degree in Engineering / Technology / Applied Sciences, shall be decided by the Academic Council.
 
2.0 Availability of seats
The number of seats available for admission to Ph.D. programme will be notified at University Portal and will depend on number of supervisors available in the university 
3.0  Admission Procedure
3.1 Candidates will be admitted in Ph.D. programme on the basis of an entrance test and subsequent interview, which will be conducted by an Admission Committee constituted by the University for this purpose
3.2 However, candidates, who have qualified the UGC/CSIR/DST/National/State Level Fellowship or GATE/ GPAT/SLET or have obtained teachers fellowship for doing Ph.D. degree, will not be required to appear in the entrance test
4.0 Entrance test
4.1  The entrance test of two hours duration will be conducted for each subject separately.
4.2 Date and venue of entrance test will be notified at University Portal
4.3 Syllabus for the test will be available on the portal of the University
5.0 Interview
5.1 Each candidate will be required to appear in an interview.
5.2 The candidates shall be called for interview in the following order:-
(I). Candidates who have qualified UGC/CSIR/DST/National or State level fellowship examination /GATE/GPAT/SLET.
(II) Candidates who have been granted teacher fellowship.
(III) Candidates according to merit list of the entrance examination.
5.3 At the time of interview, the candidates are expected to discuss their research interest/ area, choice of supervisors and co-supervisors (if any), and the proposed title of the thesis.
5.4 Date and venue of entrance test will be notified at University Portal. No T.A. and D.A. shall be payable to candidate for attending the interview
6.0 Allotment
6.1 For the candidates belonging to category as mentioned in para 5.2 (I & II), 100%
6.2 For the candidates mentioned in para 5.2 (III), the weightage of the interview marks shall be twenty percent, where as, sixty percent weightage will be given to the written entrance exam conducted as per para 4 and remaining twenty percent weightage shall be given to aggregate of qualifying PG examination.
6.3 The candidates in category
(I) of para 5.2 above will be admitted first., secondly the candidates in category
(II) of para 5.2 will be admitted and subsequently candidate in the category
(III) will be admitted in that order.
6.4 In these categories, if there are more than one candidates having equal marks, then merit shall be decided according to the percentage of marks at the qualifying PG examination.
6.5 As far as possible, the allotment board will allot the preferred place of research work and the preferred supervisor and co-supervisor, if any, and will also approve the proposed title of the thesis (however, the candidate may change title of his/her thesis, after prior approval by Research Degree Committee (RDC)). The candidate may, however, be allowed to take another chance for allotment in next admission process, if he/she does not want to change the preferences in the first instant.
7.0 Fees
Various fees, as indicated in the ordinance should be decided and put up in this point
8.0 Course work  
8.1 After having been admitted, each Ph.D. student will be required to undertake course work. The duration of the course will be two semester for all Candidates. The course work shall be treated as pre Ph.D. preparation. It shall include,
8.2 Semester one will comprise of a course on research methodology which shall include quantitative methods and computer applications etc. and one of the elective suggested by supervisor/ co supervisor.
8.3 In second semester, the candidate will be required to choose two electives with the consent of his/her allotted supervisor/co-supervisor. A review or survey of the published research in the relevant field will be submitted to the supervisor/co supervisor for which supervisor/co-supervisor shall evaluate the review report
9.0 Admission in the Ph.D. programme will be made as per the provision of amended ordinance for Ph.D. (ordinance no.11) of the University. Candidates are therefore, advised to refer this ordinance, which is available at University Portal www.iums.in , for Eligibility criterion, Admission procedure and other details.
10.0 Important Dates
Last date for submission of duly filled Application form: November 6, 2010 The schedule of the Test/Interview will be available soon
11.0  Submission
Completed forms can be submitted upto 6th November, 2010 with a A/c Payee Bank Draft/IPO of Rs. 750/- in favour of Registrar RGPV” payable at Bhopal to Registrar, Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Airport Bypass, Gandhi Nagar, Bhopal – 462033 . The Envelope must contain the following header, “Application form for Ph.D. Admission in the faculty of …………………………… ” 
Applicants must submit separate applications and A/c Payee Bank Draft/IPO of Rs. 750/- if they wish to apply to different faculties. Applications received after due date due to any of the reason are likely to be rejected,. No individual information for the test/interview will be sent. The schedule of the Test/Interview will be displayed on the University portal. Candidates are advised to check the University portal periodically after submitting their applications
